The hobbit has a special place for me, it's the first real book I remember reading and so it has a sentimental touch. An Unexpected Journey is a great film. It has a much lighter tone than LotR but that is in keeping with the source material. I was especially surprised how the numerous songs which filled the book were actually included in a fairly seamless manner. Some parts with goblins and orcs may be a bit frightening for small children. As you may expect from the length, there are several scenes not from the book. Mostly additional back story and scenes to tie this movie back to the LotR. There was a bit too much shakey cam during action scenes but the overall effect was fine. I saw it in IMAX 3D. IMAX was worth it, the 3D was good but not necessary.

Fantastic to look at, as expected, and who doesn't love Martin Freeman? He was a genius bit of casting for Bilbo. It really didn't need to be 3 hours long though. All the jammed in battles began to feel more for the spectacle than the story. Richard Armitage does a great job with Thorin as well, loved him. Definitely see it on the big screen, but know you will feel the time pass!

HOBBIT

Altogether, the Hobbit was a good movie. Though, I did have some gripes on it. To start, I didn't like the sequence with the Brown Wizard. It seemed out of of place and cartoony compared to the rest of the movie. Also, alot of things didn't match the book. For instance, Smaug was red in the book not blue from the little bit he was shown. Also, the Necromancer only had a breif mention in the book and it didn't have a big part like it did in the movie. In addition, Azog was already dead in the book but, in the movie he was alive trying to kill Thorin. This changed the entire direction of the book. I could go on but instead I will wrap this up. The Hobbit was entertaining to anyone who hasn't read the book but to someone who has, they may not enjoy it as much. I give this movie 9 out of 10

I hear lots of complaints about time and other dumb things. Bottom line is the movie is entertaining, it's well done, and I simply can't wait for the next one to come out!!! I loved it and despite the long play time, it went very quickly. So much so that the ending really snuck up on you. I plan on going again and I dont' watch movies at the theatres but a few times a year.
