Who says you can't go home...

For a decade we have revisited our initial moments with the Shire folk and all the adventures brought to us by "Lord of the Rings". The feeling that it might not feel the same or will we recognize the place, are immediately dispensed of in this first offering of "The Hobbit". The tale is shared wonderfully as if we never left and Bilbo, Frodo & Gandalf usher us in to the past with a generous portion of nostalgic moments as well as a hint of things to come. The story is told wonderfully and the new characters (Dwarfs) are both fascinating and fun. Truly this is a wonderful ride of adventure and fitting in pieces of the puzzle from a decade ago. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll definitely want more....So, see many times to catch all the multi-faceted aspects that are definitely going to be missed after only one or two go rounds. And once you've done...ache for part 2...because that is what happens when one has to leave the shire;)

Hobbit #2

Better than the 1st, but still feels really stretched from the original story. When all is said and done, it would be interesting if someone could re-edit these movies and take out all of the superfluous material to make one hell of a great movie!

The hobbit has a special place for me, it's the first real book I remember reading and so it has a sentimental touch. An Unexpected Journey is a great film. It has a much lighter tone than LotR but that is in keeping with the source material. I was especially surprised how the numerous songs which filled the book were actually included in a fairly seamless manner. Some parts with goblins and orcs may be a bit frightening for small children. As you may expect from the length, there are several scenes not from the book. Mostly additional back story and scenes to tie this movie back to the LotR. There was a bit too much shakey cam during action scenes but the overall effect was fine. I saw it in IMAX 3D. IMAX was worth it, the 3D was good but not necessary.

The singing was a little weird and not repeated (which begs the question of why it was there at all). I also can't figure out why this is going to take 3 movies to get through.

Phenomenal, it absolutely kept in the tradition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Can't wait for the follow on movies and the whole thing to be released on video to add to our collection!
