My daughters and I are Tolkien fans, and the movie was disappointing. Not the show on screen, the images are fascinating, it is amazing what state of the art filmaking technology can do. We are fans, so we can live with one line from the book becoming 20 min of movie. But it is just too much show for the storytelling. The dwarves scape from the goblins cannot be pictured as another battle for helms keep. It has become too easy to make heroes into videogame super heroes who fight single handed hordes of orcs. That exagerated action permeates the movie. And ruins it. We would have liked the story, not the video game.

I was very disapointed with Peter Jackson this time around. Should have just done one movie and stuck to the book, not add all that extra stuff that wasn't even in the book. I predict, no awards for Jackson this time around.

For a decade we have revisited our initial moments with the Shire folk and all the adventures brought to us by "Lord of the Rings". The feeling that it might not feel the same or will we recognize the place, are immediately dispensed of in this first offering of "The Hobbit".
The tale is shared wonderfully as if we never left and Bilbo, Frodo & Gandalf usher us in to the past with a generous portion of nostalgic moments as well as a hint of things to come.
The story is told wonderfully and the new characters (Dwarfs) are both fascinating and fun. Truly this is a wonderful ride of adventure and fitting in pieces of the puzzle from a decade ago.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll definitely want more....So, see many times to catch all the multi-faceted aspects that are definitely going to be missed after only one or two go rounds.
And once you've done...ache for part 2...because that is what happens when one has to leave the shire;)

Great experience. But as always it wasn't the book. Although Peter did the best for what he had to work with(time&money). The scenery was awesome, the characters familiar and the storyline was fastpaced. Now I just have to stay alive another year and a half to see the end(July2014)

After seeing reviews about the unnecessary length of the movie, I was pleasantly surprised by how watchable and engaging it was. I thought the different additions (except for those strange mountain creatures) helped build up the context of the movie. Of course, much of the additions were familiar to me from reading through the appendices of Tolkien's books.
If you're a big Tolkien fan, you'll enjoy and understand the additions, otherwise, it might not make sense.
