The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This is an entertaining film with good action and great special effects. I would recommend it to all children and adolescents and some of the sci-fi fan adults I know. I loved the actors, especially the lead who played the hobbit. His reactions to the scenarios really defined and enriched the movie. The story was a little thin, I thought, and the plot was less than innovative, as it duplicated so many of the events which made the Lord of the Rings trilogy so exciting and addictive.

I don't know which movie the critics who rated this so-so were watching because this movie was great! I knew I would like it beforehand, but it surpassed what I was even expecting. The cast for the film was well done and Martin Freeman as Bilbo was a perfect fit. If you liked the Lord of The Rings movies, you will definitely like The Hobbit.

what were they thinking

There was way too much special effects added into this movie. More time and money should have been spent on trying to keep the script and the story lines consistent with the book. I dont know what the heck they were thinking on some of the scenes. For example gandalf cracking a rock and exposing the sun on the trolls to turn them to stone. That was not in the book so why would you add that. What happened in the book would have been more entertaining. It makes no sense to me why it would be changed. Also the dwarfs are portrayed as great warriors in the movie fighting their way out of problems; in the book they were bumbling and inexperienced and did very little fighting. There are countless other examples. The scenes that worked were the ones that stuck to the book. I am a great fan of tolkien and was very disappointed with this movie.

This movie was almost better than The Fellowship of the Ring in that you see more of Bag End. The cinematography is wonderful and the action is constant. The special effects were just as wonderful. The characters are brought to life just as the book tells them. The special effects for Golum are so good and that scene so well played that you would never know he is a special effect. I loved it!

Great Movie but...

I was disappointed when Peter Jackson decided to make The Lord of the Rings first but was glad to see that 95% of the time he kept to the story in Tolkien’s books. I thought he did a great job on those movies to recreate the enchanting world described by the author. That is why it is puzzling to me that he decided to venture so far from the original story in this movie. There are numerous innovations, additions and places where the characters lines are not staying true to the book. In some places the wrong character is preforming the actions. The tone of the Hobbit was much different from The Lord of the Rings being less grim and more lighthearted and simple but Jackson managed to keep it the same by adding cliff hangers and fight scene not in the book. Jackson kept the same high quality in this movie as far as acting and special effects and the movie does follow along the same path as the book. This was a good movie it was not the Hobbit but something different.
