    The hobbit

Wonderful, looking forward to the next ones. However I hope it's not filmed the same way. I felt that I needed to move back 20 rows. It was difficult to view the fast action scenes. They seemed a blur.

    phenomenal

Peter Jackson outdid himself. It was action packed and so exciting to watch . It was great seeing some of the old faces again. Love all the dwarves! BIG fan of JRR Tolkien. Thank you JRR Tolkien for giving us such a great tale to enjoy in your books and now in the movies. Can't wait for the next 2 movies. Although I have to agree with the reviews that the new 3D technique that was used made it hard to focus on each new scene. I'm sure it's great in 2D.

    Hobbit Fans Happy

Loved it! Well done in all areas.Acting-superb, cinematography-beautiful. Entertaining even for those who are not familiar with the story. For those who are, they should not be disappointed. May be long (maybe a bit scary) for small children but entertaining for anyone old enough to have read the book.Gollum!!!

    A must see - 4 out of 5 stars

Beautiful as expected. Special effects are spectacular, and who couldn't love such a lovable character in Bilbo. My only negative is I wish Peter Jackson would stop changing the story just for the heck of it. What is wrong with the way Tolkien wrote it? Not dramatic enough? Hardly. Just stick to the original and the story is just as good. But overall a fabulous movie and I can't wait for part 2!

    Loved it

    by TJMurdo

I've been waiting so long for this movie and it didn't disappoint. We saw it in 3D which was good. I'm not fond of 3D and I'll probably opt for non-3D on the next 2 installments. I think the movie would have been just as good without 3D. It made the action scenes seem confusing.
It's been quite a few years since I reread the book, and I'm resisting the temptation to read it now because I'd rather not be too critical and point out every deviation from it. It's one of my all time favorites and I've read it several times. The movie doesn't quite capture the charm of the book, but follows the storyline fairly faithfully. Jackson seems to be trying a little too hard to include some of the characters from the LOTR triology who aren't necessary to the Hobbit storyline. I loved the beautiful scenery and way the whole middle earth was portrayed. I liked the actors, glad to see Ian McKellan back! I was happy overall with it and can't wait for the other 2.

As a big Tolkien fan, you'll probably like it...

Unless you are a purist, then stay at home. Peter Jackson's Hobbit is along the lines of his version of "The Lord of the Rings" extended versions. Lots of filler that didn't happen in the book, but will help to stretch the enjoyment of "The Hobbit" to a total of 10-12 hours for all three movies. Jackson lots of characters who weren't in the book -- particularly tying in many, many characters from Jackson's LOTR -- and long scenes of events that were only alluded to in the book (or not even, but probably had to have happened, e.g. the council in Rivendell).

Unlike LOTR, however, Jackson didn't make any of the good characters do bad things (e.g. Faramir) and didn't screw things up so they didn't make any sense anymore (e.g. Frodo facing the Witch King in Osgilliath, Frodo and Sam knowing the Merry and Pippin would be captured by orcs and deciding to leave anyway! -- all the things that pissed Tolkien purists off in the first movie.) I enjoyed the movie and can't wait to see more!

    Epic

    by

Oh this movie was spectacular, I have always been a Tolkien fan and read the books as a child. Now that I am older I am not only able to enjoy the story better but understand how well they followed the book accurately. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a well done fantasy especially for nostalgias sake, it brings me right back to reading the book :)

    Way to long

This would have been more fun by sticking to the story. Way too much time with gory battles. We were G'orced out. Despite the hoopla, I would not recommend it.

    Along the lines of LOTR

Settings, action, style are very similar to the LOTR movies, however, this movie differs in good and not so good ways.
The acting felt more natural and there were quite a few laughs. The story itself is a bit more up beat and that came through with the character interaction.
The action scenes were very familiar and at time felt a bit over the top based on the size of the groups going against each other. There was one scene that felt disjointed in scenery, but still flowed.
Overall, the nearly three hours of viewing went by at a pace that felt no more than two. For those that know the story, you will be left wanting for the next installment. Those that are new, might find themselves left hanging at maybe not the best stopping point.
