Smaug is the stereotypical antagonist. Has a love of treasure, is powerful and magnificent and all around evil. I find Smaug intriguing because he is so shrouded in mystery. Very little is known about him and he isn't shown in the films or book until close to the end.

Smaug is more than just a monster character, as some fictional dragons are portrayed. He is intelligent, and that makes him a more interesting foe.

One interesting thing about Smaug is his ability to remain in the mountain for so long that only legend remains of him, yet he's right beside Lake Town. Wonder how everyone felt when suddenly they found out they'd lived beside a dragon their whole life :O

Smaug is interesting because his bed is a gigantic pile of gold, which is something all of us would want.

Smaug is the ultimate hoarder. Hoarding is a problem people sometimes create to distract from the things that really trouble them, so he could be fixating on his treasure collection to forget how lonely it is on that mountain or other insecurities. But that might be humanizing him too much. His greed and defense of stolen treasure could just be the nature of dragons- and it's an awfully evil nature.

Smaug is an interesting characters because of his simplicity. He wants treasure and once he has it, he is content to sleep on his gold for all eternity. There is no striving, or sense of duty or honor or desire for power. No, he has his gold and he's happy and that's it. That's all there is to him. And, Benedict Cumberbatches voice makes me all shivering inside. Such a good choice for Smaug...he sounds deliciously wicked and so very dragon-esqu.

I love the way his eyes look in the previews, and the sound of his voice in the trailer is old, strong, confident and insinuating, all at once. It sounds sensuous and self-indulgent. You can hear the snake in the dragon; it's very well-done, and is fascinating, also like a snake. It makes me want to see more.

Smaug is a perfect example of a bully. He threatens and boasts about how strong and indestructible he is. He takes all the gold in Erebor for himself and could care less about the welfare of others. Smaug reminds me of a ruthless tyrant who would have nothing less than what he sets out for.
