The Great Passage dives into the whirlpool of emotions which swirl underneath the appearance of Japanese serenity. As with all true depictions of humanity - of life - tears of joy mingle with sorrow.
I appreciate, too, the humor with which the film handled the influence of foreign words and concepts on today's Japanese youth.
This Oscar nominated film (Best Foreign Film) accurately depicts the struggles and victories in the great passage to fulfilling one's dreams.
On a side note: If you are a foodie, the protagonist's love interest is a chef! The food stylist who was hired for the film did an excellent job. From the simple to the complex traditional Japanese dishes displayed, every one made this Ninja Baker's mouth water!
