While the movie stayed pretty true to the book with some exceptions, the cgi was very distracting and made it hard to watch. Also the anachronism of todays music in the scenes didn't work well IMO. I know he did that to attract a younger audience but again I didn't think it worked with the wonderful period costumes.

Coming from a past where Leo captured my heart in Romeo and Juliet, then again in Titanic. It was amazing to see him take this type of role. If you are from my time where growing up we saw him dripping wet in every movie, and swooned, and you liked the flashiness if Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, you will love this. I thought it was beautiful and well done. Ignore the critics, Go fall in love with the Great Gatsby and wish for Tiffanys diamonds. The cast was great, the soundtrack is killer. The visuals were stunning! Great movie for guys, girls, dates, book lovers...Just GO! :) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!

Leonardo Decaprio's best performance. He (finally) has come into full maturity, no longer boyish and he is fantastic! Redford's portrayal of Gatsby made no sense to me, he was so distant- Mia Farrow's Daisy made them a matched pair. In this new incarnation Gatsby and Daisy finally make sense on film. She leads him on, he is still aspiring to be high class.
This film powerfully conveys the class consciousness of the 1920's which we forget. Some of the supporting characters disappointed. I love Toby McGuire's portrayals but for some reason he did not connect for me in this role. Still can't figure out why. However, Decaprio and Mulligan are so powerful in their performances they sweep everything along with them. The sets & clothes are magnificent, even in their stageyness. The musical mix conveyed the feeling of the roaring twenties, and in my view the feeling of the era was more important than historical accuracy. Gatsby is literature not history.

My wife was very exited to see the movie, I was not. The party scenes were overdone and the movie dragged in places. The movie would have been better if it was about 20 minutes shorter. I do not recommend it unless you are a fan of Leo, who at times was very annoying.

Movie is great, stars are terrific, especially Leo and Toby BUT THE MUSIC??? Am still in shock. I am trying to reconcile this modern music with the roar of the 'roaring 20's', especially when there was so much fabulous classics to choose from. For instance, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, etc., etc., etc. Why 'o' why did they choose to spoil what could have been a 5 star film? The cinematography was great and probably spoiled with the use of 3D. I did not choose to view in 3 D format. This is not a film for very young children as they would never have understood it. However, it would be good for high school kids to see especially if they had read the book and/or other Fitzgerald works. A great American writer of an early era and who probably put a little of his own biography into the writing. Great film for young and old adults. I think it stayed true to Fitzgerald's writing, although I must admit it has been a few years since I read it. Must re-read.
