The Book is Still Better

The only aspect of the movie I enjoyed was DiCaprio's depiction of Gatsby. Otherwise, the movie stays true to the story, but it didn't quite meet my expectations or my imagination of the novel. Most people enjoyed the Jay-Z soundtrack used during the party scenes, as they felt it helps the audience relate to those scenarios. I felt it took away from the feel and authenticity of the era the film was portraying.

Luscious visuals, engaging story line, depth of connection to each scene, each person despite not seeing it in 3D. Music was a bit surprising. Better watching the movie than listening beforehand. Definitely a good ride.

There just wansn't a lot of passion or plot that kept you drawn in. It was stunning to see but I did keep wondering when it was going to be over and if there was a twist at the end to make it all worth it.

Disappointed

I have seen all the previous film versions of the book and I was disappointed after seeing the trailers on TV. I think Leonardo DeCaprio was miscast. Although he is incredibly handsome, I never felt the character with him. I wasn't thrilled with the music either. The costumes were fabulous as was the art direction. The dialogue was of course fantastic.

Everything I Expected and More

I LOVED THIS MOVIE, but before I loved this movie, I loved the book for its poetic prose and for bringing the pomp and parties of the '20s to life. If the book brought the '20s to life, then this movie breathed new, spectacular life into it with its vibrant colors, glamour, and music. The use of contemporary music made this era even more relatable to 21st century adults by paralleling our experiences. The modern twist inspired me to see this movie on the big screen and it did not disappoint. More important than the look and sound was the actual content, which glued this experience together. I was very pleased that the original storyline stuck, though I don't see why it would have had to be altered. It is definitely something to be appreciated in this day and age when movie makers take story ideas from books and re-warp them into their own inconsistent creation. My only complaint is DiCaprio's acting seemed "put on" at just a few points, but overall each character's acting was DARLING.
