The Great Gatsby is visually stunning but words of praise stop there. An over the top attempt to make a near 100 year old American literary classic digestible to 21st Century audiences spoils what otherwise might have been a successful retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's love story. Hip Hop music by Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyonce, and others as the soundtrack to a period piece featuring stunning art production and costumes true to the 1920s is not just stupid, but insane. Direction meanders and never quite gets solidly on track. DiCaprio's performance as Gatsby is wonderful at times yet often seems lost and confused, Robert Redford's performance is far superior; in fact, the 70's film is far superior. Tobey Maguire is hard to watch, he is miscast. The movies finale falls flat, it lacks sufficient drama to make you really care that Gatsby meets his demise. But by this time, the only thing I could think of is... How much longer before this mess is over with. Skip it.

Overall, I enjoyed the show. The party scenes assaulted the senses and were, in my opinion, a little over the top. I am still thinking about it , tryng to get a better understanding. Leonardo DiCaprio was, as usual, awesome. It made me want to read the book so I could get a better back story on the characters.

I re-read the book before I went to see it last night and noticed that much of the dialogue was taken directly from the book word by word, as well as many scenes. I think the actors fit perfectly with the characters and the costumes were amazing! The only reason I didn't like the movie was because it was 3D(stupid idea) and having Jay-Z's music playing in a 1920's themed movie? Definitely not a good idea. I recommend watching it, just not paying $15 to see it in 3D.

The movie did make me understand the story better than the original film. I did have empathy for Gatsby, but found the over indulgence of the rich sickening. I thought Daisy was beautiful, but pathetic. Toby was great as the narrator and cousin. The acting was superb. I think Leonardo is good looking and a great actor, but I still like Robert Redford as Gatsby.

While the movie stayed pretty true to the book with some exceptions, the cgi was very distracting and made it hard to watch. Also the anachronism of todays music in the scenes didn't work well IMO. I know he did that to attract a younger audience but again I didn't think it worked with the wonderful period costumes.
