Good but.....

I rate this movie a B. Firstly the whole subtitle thing is not a big deal to me but more than a few people weren't expecting that and it diminshed the experience for some . Anyway the story itself was beautifully told BUT I think they spent to much time not focusing on the artform and played up the underlying attraction too much. As for the fights themselves they were good with great technique and some old school wirework thrown in for good measure, however the way they were edited left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Great performances from the leads. I say go and enjoy.

I for 1 hate reading subtitles when in the movies and would have preffered the movie to be translated in english. I hope when it comes out on DVD I will have the option to pick the language so I can see it again and FULLY enjoy it.

Everything you expect in a WKW film but with satisfying Action

A truly wonderful film to be seen. I was very fortunate to have this open near me. I was very pleased and enchanted to see this near masterpiece on the big screen. WKW's style is very strong with this film and beautifully strings you across the life of Yip Man and the people around him. These lives experiences bend, twist and cross each other like the hands of a martial artist sharpening their skills. Fans of WKW will find wonderful nods to older films of his and new comers will be floored by the lucid dream like images and atmosphere that is created by this wonderful director. This is a definite see. Can not wait for the DvD now. Since I have not seen Ashes of Time I was not sure how WKW handled action or fight scenes so I was curious to see it done. I was not disappointed. Fights were tense and exciting. Nothing over the top like Crouching Tiger but still slightly exaggerated. It never seemed too crazy and pretty close to reality.

Not what I expected, but still pleasantly surprising

This movie is a well told story. The camera work was a bit heavy on some elements, however, it did not detract from the storytelling overall. I cam looking for fights from the old school; and to see the forging of an icon. The fighting was actually better than I expected because it was shown in the context of history (I did a lot of enlightening research after the movie and it is factually accurate). However, instead of watching an icon emerge I saw a man become a Master. It was interesting.

The GrandMaster

This is a must see movie if you want to learn about the history and story of Ip Man. The fight scenes are very good. The only thing that I would say that was supersizing is that there are sub titles in the whole movie so you have to pay close to attention to the movie. If you decide to go to something to eat or go to the bathroom you are going to be lost.
