Slow and Beautiful

*This movie is subtitled* The Grandmaster is the retelling of one of the last great Kung Fu masters. It bridges old China with post World War II China. This movie features the purest Kung Fu you'll see in a mainstream movie. There's very little wire usage. It was refreshing to see solid fight scenes that didn't depend on shaky cam to heighten the action. Make no mistake, The Grandmaster isn't a pure action flick. It's very much a story driven drama. The plot is slow to develop and focuses mainly on Ip Man's personal, cultural, and political struggles. It just so happens that the film's subject is a grandmaster. The Grandmaster is an amazing tale of how what's important today can become completely irrelevant tomorrow. If you don't mind some story with your action, catch a showing of The Grandmaster. There's a brief scene just after the credits start and nothing after If you like my reviews, add me as a fan. I'll add you back!

It was definitely a Wong Kar Wai film. Like In the Mood for Love and 2046, the cinematography, the pacing, slow motion scenes, the romance and the music were consistent with Wong's auteur style. However, having seen four other films by two different directors about Ip Man, the story was disappointing. The focus seemed to be the Northern Lady with whom Ip Man became involved in Hong Kong rather than Ip Man himself.

Excellent filem, beautiful cinematography. Do NOT go if you are expecting to see blood-and-guts Kung Fu. The fighting is more like ballet than like your typical 70s Bruce Lee flick. Very slow-paced, languid and dreamlike.

This movie is okay but a bit slow for me. The action was a bit slow and not as smooth as Donnie Yen, Yes I'm comparing it when Donnie Yen played as Ip Man. This movie didn't even come close but that is just my opinion. B
