Movies that start out as books...

usually are better books than movies, IMHO. This is a classic example - it's a good movie, worth seeing, perhaps not great for the under-10 crowd but good effects and such. Nicole Kidman did a superb job with her role, I thought; we enjoyed Daniel Craig's performance; and the girl playing Lyra (whose name escapes me at the moment) seemed pretty good.
And yet, and yet... if you've read the book, then you may well be bothered - as not only I was, but also one of my children, who'd read the book, was as well - by the lack of fidelity to the original storyline. Books that are turned into movies always have to have adaptations, yes, and some details will change; but we thought that too much of the plot was changed, so that this was too different. I found it a bit confusing afterwards as well since a month or two later I had trouble remembering which details/plot showed up in which format.
Still, I loved the book, and will read the rest of the series (before those movies come out ;)

Visually stunning, properly cast, but not true to the book.

Overall rating: rent it, read the book.

    disappointing

     by  elisamaza

I had not read the book when I saw it, and the best thing about the movie was that it made me want to run home and do so. It's very pretty to look at, the little girl is good, and it's entertaining enough, but it felt insubstantial, which is not what this story should feel like. It's not bad, and would probably be a good one for the family - entertaining and non-poisonous for the kids, not too painful for the adults.

After reading the book, I was confused about some of the character changes. One thing it got absolutely right: I detest that monkey.

    OMFG

     by  greenieblade

this was one of the WORST movies i have ever seen. it's a basic anti christ situation from everybody. just like super mario bros. 3, this movie worships the devil. the golden compass huh... more like "The shity comp assssss." if someone asks you to see this movie, just say no.... see, it's kind of like drugs. as a matter of fact i found a relationship between this movie and drugs because the director must have been smoking quite a large amount of pot when he was making this awful movie.

    golden compass movie review

     by  dan1224

This movie was just like Eragon. Based off a great book but the movie was slaughtered due to scenes that were taken out, a bad cast, and did not follow the book at all. I did not really even understand any of it because most of the time I was asleep instead of watching it to. That's another thing, it was so boring! It was also very anti- christ. But only the movie, not the book (For some odd reason.). The people had theese things called demons in which if the demons were killed, the person would be killed and vice-versa. Is'nt that pretty much saying that the people are demons?... That's what I thought. It did have some good action parts but they were very short so you could'nt even enjoy them. All-in-all, it was a large disapiontment that nobody I know enjoyed.
