    Schethy plot

    by Greattreasure

The adult roles were animated and the children were wooden, the plot had a lot of gaps and holes and the special effects were old fashioned. I'm hoping the sequel will be a lot better.
Nicole Kidman was great, however the weak supporting cast failed to make a go of this movie.

    Horrible set of disjointed pictures

I heard about problems between this movie and the church, so I decided my son should see it. What a disappointment! It's a set of disjoint pictures, the connections are non-existing or convoluted - every new picture and you wonder - what the ...? The jumps seem arbitrary. The main heroes show no emotions other than basic (e.g. fear and joy), and show no thought process. DISAPPOINTING!!! The graphics are nice, though.

    Better than Eragon!

I couldn't help but think The Golden Compass was phenomenal. It was way better than the Narnia movies and Eragon put together.

Movies that start out as books...

usually are better books than movies, IMHO. This is a classic example - it's a good movie, worth seeing, perhaps not great for the under-10 crowd but good effects and such. Nicole Kidman did a superb job with her role, I thought; we enjoyed Daniel Craig's performance; and the girl playing Lyra (whose name escapes me at the moment) seemed pretty good.
And yet, and yet... if you've read the book, then you may well be bothered - as not only I was, but also one of my children, who'd read the book, was as well - by the lack of fidelity to the original storyline. Books that are turned into movies always have to have adaptations, yes, and some details will change; but we thought that too much of the plot was changed, so that this was too different. I found it a bit confusing afterwards as well since a month or two later I had trouble remembering which details/plot showed up in which format.
Still, I loved the book, and will read the rest of the series (before those movies come out ;)
