Go see The East: So much better than expected.

The East has splendid acting, and deep moral dilemmas. It's an almost perfect movie about the fate of our planet and the complex moral decisions among those who work to bring change - where is the line between justified protest and senseless violence. All the acting is brilliant, and the it works as both a thriller and a political film, harkening back to older movies like the Paralax View and others. There was only one slightly false moment. I and my companions were riveted from beginning to end. We talked about it for an entire lunch.

Awesome, fully complete drama/thriller.

This movie has it all, and is done really, really well. It's both a really fun, suspenseful thriller/drama, and a very deep-thinking, meaningful, and relevant movie of our time. It poses some really important questions about the nature of justice, and what people may risk to see it's achieved... Buy your ticket, take a friend or two, and take your thinking cap. Enjoy!

Break Out Film for a break out talent

This film will be remembered as the film that announces a great new talent: Brit Marling, who not only gives a magnetic performance but wrote and helped produced the film. The weight of working undercover and the morale dilemmas that the lead character must traverse avoids easy answers and engages the viewer to wonder what they would do in a similar situation. The other cast members, especially Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page and Patricia Clarkson, all provide great performances and ground the film in cinematic reality. I highly recommend this low budget film.

Best Film of the Year

This is by far the best film I have seen this year. I am going back this weekend with another group of friends. It's great to see with a group, go out to dinner afterwards and discuss! It is socially relevant, has depth and numerous twists and turns to keep you glued to the screen. I have sworn to never buy another dvd again due to my budget, but when this comes out on dvd, I will not only get one for myself but as gifts for family and friends as well. Yes, it was that great!

The East

It has something to say. Really. And well executed. Excellent acting too. Brit Marling (who co-wrote) plays a corporate undercover operative assigned to gather intel on Eco-terror cells. Her character, Sarah, is intelligent, thoughtful and quite lovely. She drives the story. It makes for a compelling suspense thriller. The supporting cast is terrific with actors like Ellen Page, Jason Ritter, Toby Kebbell, Julia Ormond and Patricia Clarkson. Alexander Skarsgård as an enigmatic activist is solid and very spooky. It asks questions of us: the viewers. You can decide for yourself whether they are of value to you. I really enjoyed the deliberate pacing and exciting back end. Tony and Ridley Scott are among the producers. Zal Batmanglij did a nice job directing his second feature 8.5 out of 10. I gotta say I loved watching her.
