Well done, and historically correct. Worth seeing.

Life is not easy being a duchess!
American critics never seem to give Keira Knightly credit for her skills as an actress. She is superb in this beautifully done British film of part of the life of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire married to the very aristocratic Duke, a great power in the politics of the era and wonderfully portrayed by Ralph Fiennes. Don't forget that Georgiana Spencer was an aristocrat in her own right as one of the Spenser family, part of the great Spencer- Churchill family, more ancient than the British Royal family itself. Anyway, the romantic, charismatic 17 year old beauty finds herself in a loveless marriage, becomes famous for her wit, beauty, fashion and political brain, but love always finds a way and we have the handsome smouldering Charles Fox to step into the breach and off we go, love versus honor. Remind you of another famous Spenser? Splendid costumes, cinematography, music all enjoyed to the full by the attentive audience. Definitely an award winner in UK, difficult to say in US.

The Duchess
I didn't go expecting much but I liked it. The revalation that Keira Knightly's and Ralph Fiennes' characters were both trapped by their nobility was compelling. (although the Duke was allowed much more fun.) Also, that the only true relationships the women could have was with their children was moving. The Duke setting up the Dutchess' lover in his political ambitions and allowing Knightly to see their baby showed he wasn't one dimensional. Although Fiennes' acting was. I think Knightly's portrayal of the Dutchess, done largely with facial expressions was good. Ralph Fiennes was wasted in this role. The script could have given the Duchess a more three dimensional character by showing her designing her own dresses (as it indicated) with pleasure. The political situation in England in 1777was another dimension that was interesting. I liked the filming. The greatest tragedy of the film was how bad Charlotte Rampling looked. Could I really be that old?

The Dutchess
This is another beautifully done British movie. It's a lavish production, very well done in all aspects. It will certainly be the Brits favorite for the Bafta and I believe it will do well in the Golden Globe and Oscar awards too. Keira Knightley gives as good a performance as she is able to, and Ralph Fiennes is perfect as the ruthless Duke of Devonshire.

The Duchess
Excellent film. Knightley and Fiennes do well with their characterizations of people caught in the "shoulds" of their society. Echoes of the situation Princess Diana found herself in. I wonder how it was received in Britain.
