The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

After a stroke French Elle Magizine editor Jean-Domineque Bauby wakes up in a hospital. He relizes that he can't talk or move his body exept his two eyes. The left eye has an extensive cornea and the docter has to sew it up. The whole movie is filmed as if we were looking out of his eye (Best Cinematography nominee).
The whole movie is about him having to deal with locked in syndrome. To communicate he blinks his eye once for yes and twice for no. The docters figure out a way that he can speak; they say the alphabet then he blinks for the letter he wants. He actually wrote a book this way (which the movie was based off).
This movie shows you that you need to be thankful about everything you have in life. The movie is in French so you'll need subtitles. There is nuidity such as full frontal male nuidity (not suggestive just while he's taking a bath). Also some suggestive female upper nudity. All in all this movie tells a great story and I highly reccomend it.

    Put it on the list

In the way the French love to this movie was laden with metaphors - some very obvious, some open for discussion. I didn't find it quite as dark/depressing as some seemed to. Just another friendly reminder that life is precious and time is ticking. I agree with others that the cinematography truly captured his isolation. If you don't like French movies this will likely drive you nuts. If you're able to allow the experience to take over - give it a shot. Enjoy!
