This was an excellent movie which explores the moral ambiguities of life .A group of highly skilled prisoners are recruited in a Nazi concentration camp and recieve safety and special treatment while their compatriots meet suffering and death .
The price? All these prisoners are skilled printers and their "job" is to counterfieit English and American currency which will be used to flood the financial markets and thus extend the war.
The questions of reality and fakery, right and wrong, good and evil , idealism and pragmatism are all explored in the conflicts amongst the group and within each characters moral center.
Brilliantly written and directed, all the actors are excellent in their roles. Complexity is everywhere; even the "evil" Nazi who has recruited this group turns out to be a former idealist, a Communist, who has "gone with the flow" and been co-opted by the Nazis.
Go see this movie if your view of the world includes richness and ambiguity.

The Counterfeiters is one of those historical movies that is very difficult to watch but you know you want the information: that you should be a witness to what happened. The characters were well done and I developed a love for them in spite of their flaws. This movie is a grim reminder of the horrors of WWII, like Schindler's List, but something that I feel enriched me with another level of awareness and understanding.

For anyone with interest in one of the most horrendous times(WWII) in more recent world history, this is an incredible piece of filmmaking. This is the story of how the Nazis attempted to undermine, by flooding both the British and U.S. economies with expertly made counterfeit bills, through the use of Jewish prisoners who were expert in counterfeiting, particularly the lead character(Salomon-shown in the poster).
The acting, directing, cinematography and overall narrative were wonderfully done. Go see it!!

This movie is all about extraordinary moral dilemmas in an extreme situation. Set in a German concentration camp in WWII, a master forgery expert is coerced into helping the Nazi war effort by counterfeiting first British and then American currency. He and rest of his Jewish crew forced into this project struggle not only with their plight in the concentration camp (and all that is going on around them) but also with the fact that they as Jews are helping the Nazi's. Layered upon this is even more guilt from the fact that they receive special treatment while their fellow inmates are being tortured and murdered. This film is all about the moral struggle that they all face daily.
Recommended if: you enjoy a movie centered on exploring moral dilemmas and are an ardent history buff about Germany and WWII. If so - the film is interesting and very well acted. Accurate and believable. In German with subtitles - although I found the German too muffled to easily follow.
