Michael Caine greatly deserved the Oscar he copped in this very faithful adaptation of the John Irving novel of the same name. Here he plays a unorthodox doctor in rural Maine circa 1930s-40s who heads up an orphanage. He also offers young woman who find themselves pregnant a safe haven for clean and discreet abortions. Tobey MacGuire co-stars as the young boy the doctor takes under his wing like a father but as he becomes a man he years for something more and leaves to find himself. Beautiful period detail and wonderful direction by Lasse Halstrom. Bring up many provocative questions about life. A winner all around!
