One man is determined to reel in the uncatchable fish in this playful comedy from the Czech Republic. Jarda (Petr Ctvrtnicek) spends each summer living and working at Angel's Lake, a small rural beachside community where the locals find share the sun and the water with a handful of tourists from the cities during the warmer months. Jarda runs a seasonal watering hole, the Tropicana Bar, where folks congregate to drink beer and swap stories. One story that's been circulating for years is the legend of Lojza, a massive catfish so big and powerful that it's said to have eaten a dog belonging to Vrtilek (Rudolf Hrusinsky), a local handyman given to tall tales. While plenty of local fishermen have tried to catch Lojza, no one has succeeded, and when a visitor arrives claiming he'll turn the giant catfish into a trophy by the summer's end, no one puts much stock in his boast. However, it soon becomes clear that the locals have underestimated the fisherman's determination, if not his talent. Posledni plavky (aka The Catfish Summer) was an official selection at the 2008 Finale Pilzen Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
