Don't go if you read the book.

I was very disappointed in the movie. I read the book and thought it was extremely well written and coming from a unique perspective. The movie was just short of awful. It did not do the characters, their lives or the time during the war any justice. I actually felt that I could have written a better screen play. Great actors (like Geoffrey Rush) couldn't save this movie. I am reading the book again to rid myself of the memory of this cinematic failure.

We are frequent movie goers and would rate this this one of the best pictures we have ever seen. The story line, the acting and the unusual perspective make this a must.

This movie is worth seeing. Although it takes place during the holocaust, it is a different type of movie. It focusses on a German couple and their adopted daughter.

Better than the Book

It's rare when a film is even better than a beloved book. The Book Thief is. This film is a gem that you won't want to miss, and will want to see again. It deserves Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography. Best Screenplay. You name it. The cinematography is stunning. You feel yourself transported back to Germany in 1938. The movie seems to capture the cobblestone streets, or a child's sweet blue sweater and red-and-white smock. Sophie Nelisse - who plays the young German girl, Liesel Meminger - is mesmerizing. You cannot take your eyes off her. Her face is full of sweetness , intelligence, and kindness. Geoffrey Rush's performance is so full of love that you ache to let go when the movie ends. These two deserve an Oscar for their performance. As does Emma Watson. Think about your favorite movies of all-time. Then, get ready to add to your list. This one will be on it, guaranteed.

I read the book and loved it and the film did not disappoint. The plot line followed the book closely, the casting was spot on, and the experience very moving. Great job!
