Having read the book some things were missing but the characterizations & the heart of the story were still portrayed Still a very good movie and may inspire you to read the book.
I give it 3 out of 4 stars

My friend and I did not like it at all. It was wooden and very "Hollywood-ish". Geoffrey Rush was unusually off and not believable in this role, the boy who played the Jewish guy being hidden smiled in a silly way throughout the role - except when he was unconscious. I would not recommend this movie.

This is a heart wrenching movie that made me cry. Its a must see. Since I had a mother who came from Nazi Germany I found it to be real. The acting is suberb.

This movie was moving to me in many ways. Not only is the acting and cast incredible, Geoffery gives another commanding performance, as he did in "The King's Speech", but I lost a grandfather I never knew, and my father lost him when he was only 4 years old to the Nazi terror.
From a German's perspective I truly believe that most of them whole-heartedly despised the war. I was stationed there for nearly four years, and know they are a great and wonderful people. This, personally, took me back there. The cobble stoned streets, and small village architecture was as real as it is in memory.
The story itself tells an amazing tale of how WWII, not only effected lives of other nations, but their very own lives. It's as powerful as it gets. Must go!!!

I was very disappointed in the movie. I read the book and thought it was extremely well written and coming from a unique perspective. The movie was just short of awful. It did not do the characters, their lives or the time during the war any justice. I actually felt that I could have written a better screen play. Great actors (like Geoffrey Rush) couldn't save this movie. I am reading the book again to rid myself of the memory of this cinematic failure.
