Joss Whedon to 'Avengers' Fans: Don't Expect a "Happy Ending"

By: Sean OConnell on September 11, 2012 at 8:39AM Comments (47)

Joss Whedon made the media rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of his personal side project Much Ado About Nothing, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play that Whedon filmed with close friends and collaborators. But in virtually every interview given, Whedon had to comment on Marvel, and his plans for an Avengers sequel

Earlier, we pointed out how Whedon gave his blessing to Super director James Gunn and his “very twisted take” on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film. “It all comes from a real love for the material," Whedon told MTV. "It's going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he's going to come from left field and I'm going to go, 'What?' and then, 'Of course, why didn't I think of that?'”

Shortly after, Whedon sat down with 24 Hours, a Vancouver outlet, and talked about the behind-the-scenes process on The Avengers 2 and the other Marvel movies that tie directly into his vision. And while he can not talk specifics of what he plans to do with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Whedon had this to say about the next chapter in the franchise’s story:

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."

How do you think Whedon will twist the knife? Should we strap in for the Empire Strikes Back of comic-book movies, where our heroes are drained, damaged and scattered to the far reaches of the galaxy by picture’s end? Needless to say, we can’t wait to see what Whedon and his team have in store for the Avengers sequel, which won’t be in theaters until 2015.

Anyone who expects a "happy ending" from Whedon is delusional and/or hasn't seen his other work. It's all about that moment that rips your heart out ( sprinkled with some hope but still). ^_^

Well, the villian is suppose to be Thanos, if you follow the comics you find that it is very rare for people to get through a great big event involving Thanos without a death....or two.....or three.....if they are lucky. Thanos is one of those villians you just don't defeat, you at best make him decide he doesn't want to be the victor anymore (happened more than once) or you do something that stalls him indefinitely and he just moves on to something else, you just don't win outright against him.

Yeah I known that for a while, he was first in Iron Man issue #55. He's also probably going to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy too!

Yeah, I understand the post, but still I wont like it if he makes it more darker than the first one because than it will feel like one of Nolan Batman movies. But that's not going to stop me from seeing it.

Yeah, Nolan's Dark Knight's and upcoming Man of Steel attract older kids, teens and adults. Marvel Cinematic Universe is for just about everyone because they are packed with humor and not too dark. I still found TDKR funny from characters like Catwoman and Alfred.

I still don't get why he is doing another one. First one was very lackluster and was pretty average. Well, hope he makes up for it in the next. Ant man will most likely be in it so there's that.

You know the first one made MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS and is the 3rd highest grossing film of ALL TIME (behind Titantic and Avatar)! The film is also part of a series of comic book movies that is on its second phrase and it (minor spoiler) have even hinted the next villain! So of course there is going to be a Avengers 2. I only agree with you that Ant Man will probably be in it. If you hated the movie, then go read the comic books.

Since when did an Average movie = hate for it? Avengers was good when it couldn't afford to be simply good. And is money supposed to automatically change how the movie was? How does that work? Quality of a movie to quantity of sheep are not the same. Don't bring up that garbage titanic, some crap that romanticizes Gendercide, no thanks. Also I never argued about an Avengers 2, just the fact why this guy who clearly didn’t handle the first one that well is in charge of the next one.
