To Kill a Mockingbird at Plaza Bonita, CA

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite films, and I was eager to see it on the big screen. I enjoyed the event tremendously, although the restoration on portions of the film gave it the fuzzy look of a 60's television show shot on video. I am not sure if this was due to its being transmitted via satellite, but it left me feeling as if the theater were a big television screen. I saw the film with a friend, and we both noticed that Mayella (the supposed rape victim) did not touch the Bible when she was sworn in to the witness chair. This was something we probably never would have seen on a smaller screen. It is a detail that seemed to explain the character's willingness to lie on the stand.

Did you know the three best selling works of fiction in the 2Oth were all first time novels by women: Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell; Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Suzanne; and To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. This movie is closely drawn from the original novel, it's a must see on DVD, but for Turner Classic Movies to bring us yet another must see classic to the big screen is truly awesome. Can't wait for the next one.

50th anniversary remaster was a great experience. I enjoyed the commentary and interviews provided by TCM. Truly a classic. Wish they made more story driven well produced films like this.

To see this film on the big screen, and in the black and white, was a joy. I wish there were more releases like this. Was though, disappointed that there not that many people in the theatre, and no minorities. This to me would have been a great movie for students to see.
