The Birds a Real Horror

Dear Fathom Events: I don't want to sit through a 20 minute Robert Osborne interview that gives away the best scenes of the movie BEFORE the movie is screened! Shouldn't that be obvious? Either start the movie on time or screen a brief clip of something UNRELATED to the movie we're about to see. I also don't want to see before the movie starts what the beautiful heroine looks like 50 years later. The Regal Stonecrest theater in South Charlotte (NC) had the sound cranked up to deafening levels, both for the Osborne interview and the feature film. I had to flee the theater soon after the opening credits to preserve my hearing. The digital artifacts in the feature film were fairly obvious and distracting. My seat was about in the middle of the theater. In short, THE BIRDS laid an egg.

Ten minutes into the start time and the screen was blank. Told the manager and she sent someone into the control booth. Eureka! On the screen I saw a Direct TV feed menu and after some messing around and fast forwards and reverses I got to see some really goods interviews from the castmembers and a wonderful interview with Robert Osborne and star Tippi Hedren! Once the actual film began, I was shocked to see that it was in the dreaded fullscreen format! This will be my last TCM movie event! J. White III

Wonderful Alfred Hitchcock Movie Classic. Great to see it on the big screen. Loved the Tippi Hendren interview prior to watching the movie. Hope we can continue these TCM movie events. Love it!!!!

There was white outline around the characters throughout most of the movie which was distracting. Overall the picture quality was not as good as I expected. It also seems to me that some of the movie was edited out but it's been a long time since I'd seen it so I could be wrong.

I LOVED It!

THE BIRDS is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies; however, until last night I had never seen it on the "big screen" with an audience. First of all, the video and audio restorations are pristine! The effects hold up well considering the movie is almost 50 years old, and there was no CGI in 1963. Seeing it on the "big screen" allowed me to notice details I had previously missed. Unlike many of today's movies, Hitch takes his time building the characters, which appeals to me. Movies with only one action scene after another leave me cold. Although this is considered by some to be a "flawed" movie, it deals well with the human side of how people deal with unexpected and major disruptions to their everyday lives. I especially love the bantering between Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor at the beginning of the film. I look forward to receiving THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION in Blu-Ray, which includes THE BIRDS.
