OK, I was a fan of the original Speed Racer cartoon series 40 years ago, meaning I'm now 40 years older than the target demographic of 10-year old boys. But if you don't expect more than a movie meant for 10-year olds, you'll be highly entertained. It's not just the CGI work, which can be breathtaking at times, but the visual style, scene editing, etc., are all a constant treat. The movie is very family oriented and even the annoying kid brother grew on me by the end. And if you always wanted to see if Christina Ricci could play a fairly normal character, this may be your one opportunity.

As expected, the movie was visually stunning! Kids of ALL ages will enjoy this movie. I would recommend however that you go in there expecting a movie purely for entertainment purposes. There were a little bit too much of the flashbacks which made it a little loose. Christina Ricci looked like an anime character which worked well I thought. If you are looking for great acting and a beautiful storyline, I would probably pass on this. Great family movie, interesting date movie. :-)

It's actually really good. I enjoyed it as an art piece. It is really different from anything else I've seen. I love the way it is edited… the characters and props swiping the screen. It's really unique. You'll need to put on your fantasy cap. Isn't that what we want though? To be a part of a fantasy on the screen? I watched it and enjoyed it as I would a piece of art on exhibit.

[From an advance screening:] This is basically an extended live-action CARTOON (reprising elements of the animated TV series from the late ’60’s). EMILE HIRSCH plays the sometimes-conflicted grown-up version of Mr. Speed Racer, who has to fight inner and outer demons in deciding how to handle offers to compete for rich racing moguls. JOHN GOODMAN and SUSAN SARANDON play his parents, and MATTHEW FOX plays his mentor “Racer X”. For the audience I was with (including a lot of kids), most of the laughs in the film came from actions by a pet chimpanzee. The film (by the Wachowski Brothers) is expectedly superficial, with a story-line that’s elemental-- but, it boasts a riot of colorful and impressive CGI effects to go along with set designs done in appropriate cartoon-like exaggerated color. It’s not a great film by any means-- but, it’s FUN in a lighthearted, action-filled way (cleverly calculated to encourage a hoped-for series of Sequels). I enjoyed it, & you probably will too.

This movie will either total suck or be wicked sweet. But why see this when you can go see Iron Man???
