    Different

     by  Mgogue

This movie is kind of freaky and it starts slowish but once u really get into it --it's pretty cool - definitely different in a way that pulp fiction was different - u know not run of the average. But u also can't help but love the Rock - just looking at him is a treat - and there are so many other good Jon Lovitz - Seans Scott & then Justin Timberlake - maybe not true all actor but working on it - it was alright. But if u are kind of below average & can't keep up - this isn't the movie for you - stick to Disney.

    Original buzz:

    wtf?

Well, the movie is well made, but if you have a hard time following confusing films, this is not for you...Although I understood what was going on overall, a few ppl that saw it with me were becoming more confused throughout the film. The ending was weak and the movie itself was really out there, and yes i found it very confusing at times. too. I am glad that I didn't go to theaters to see it. It does however, have a ton of random actors thrown together that wouldn't expect to ever see in the same movie...it has some humor in it as well...overall, CONFUSING is the word that comes to mind with this movie...Pointless is another good one. It's interesting but make sure you read the synopsis so you remember what the hell it's about otherwise you'll be lost.

Bizaare Apocalyptic Epic (Read the Prequel Graphic Novels First)

Without first reading the prequel graphic novel, Southland Tales will seem like the most random film you have ever seen. If you read the graphic novel first, Southland Tales will still be abstract, but it will also actually be coherent and comprehensible. Was this a mistake on the filmmaker's part? Yes. Is it eccentric? Yes. Is it a great story worth dedicating hours of your life to understand? Yes.

I do not knowany other filmmaker and cast who experimented this much with the film medium since David Lynch. Is it Lynch? No. Is it good? Yes. Is it easy to understand? No. Is the film meaningless? No. Like Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly does not coddle his audience in terms of narrative. Like a dream, you are going to have to piece it together after you finish viewing it.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Prequel Graphic Novel and read it before watching the film! Then buy the DVD and let the film wash over you like a bizaare dream. At the end of the entire experience, figure it out.

    Puke Storm

This movie made me think of the phrase "puke storm". It pains me to say give this movie a bad review because Donnie Darko is in my Top 20 list, and because I really respect creativity and the creative process. But this movie sucks. It doesn't work, and for A LOT of reasons. It isn't just one thing. There are too many styles, too many stories trying to be told without anything cohesive tying them together and without a commitment to an idea. The style of the movie itself is schizophrenic, perhaps intentionally, but still no fun for the viewer who is trying to piece together a story and relate to character motivation. For me, the centerpiece of the film was the "anti" Justin Timberlake video mid-story. You'll get what I mean if you see it. There were a couple of other nice moments. But 5 minutes out of 2.5 hours does not make it worth anyone's time. Do something more entertaining - like the laundry. Or read something TRULY revolutionary - anything but watch this puke storm.

    A Monumental Turd!

To start, this movie is downright awful (I think I already mentioned that). I is supposed to be a futuristic, graphic novel type, sci-fi take on important issue that our society should be concerned, however the viewer realizes these issue exist, but Kelly never says anything new, compelling, or noteworthy about them. Instead he just loads this big pile of #%&$ into a shot gun and pulls the trigger. I can?t really even go on because the movie really turns into a huge, complete mess, with absurd characters, bad acting, and a ton of how do you say it?? HORRIBLE screen writing. The cast from SNL along with John Lovitz can?t even save this sinking ship. It's sad when Justin Timberlake and Seann William Scott actually put in a respectable performance and can't save the movie.
