It feels like a student film... and whadda ya know? Its the director's first movie
Waited on this for 2 years. At the 1st word it was out I drove to another city for it. I thought Emily Browning had potential, despite a weak movie record, I find her doll-like look arresting. But she had no presence here, she came off like a child and gives an uninspired performance. I also was mislead by trailers, expecting a story where the line between fantasy & reality was murky. They don't make Repulsion or Picnic at Hanging Rock anymore, but I thought at least... Vanilla Sky, The Cell, Black Swan? They showed a haunting ambiance, with close-ups of drugs, a girl in bed dreaming; critics writing "gorgeous", "hypnotic." This suggested something dreamlike, but it was closer to a made-for-tv movie about hanging with the wrong crowd. And its not done well, they threw in every cliche in the book for her sad life. Her world of sex is uninteresting-- No David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick. No realism either, she looked far too clean-cut to be so desperate. So vapid I walked out halfway...enjoy
