This movie would have been tons better if I hadn't seen the trailer before I sat down in the theater. What little 'surprise' the movie had left was ruined by the plot being so damn transparent. Save this for a rental/download/etc. It's not worth the theater time unless you just had free tickets like I did.

I have been watching horror/suspense movies since I was 11 years old. I have seen almost every B horror movie from the 80s and most of the "classic" horror movies. I am usually not impressed by more recent genre of horror movies as they fail to correctly build suspense, the soundtrack ruins the moment, or obvious attempts to shock the audience.
However, this movie much like Insidious was in excellent form. It managed to perfectly build the moment and hit you when you least expected it. The soundtrack (unlike most movies which actually damage the potential fear factor) was amazing. It was a mix of sinister (pun intended) and eerie sound combinations that really put chills down my spine.
Acting was superb, no cheesy reactions or unrealistic responses from characters that can turn a good horror into a hilarious B movie. Anyone who is a fan of Insidious, or enjoys being thoroughly traumatized by a good scare, this is definitely a must see movie.

The best part of the movie is the films. Just when I was convinced that found footage movies were tired and needed to be retired along comes a movie that completely refreshed the trope. And because the found footage is old 8 mm reels it has a distorted look and feel to it, adding to the film’s horror.
The films are more than just a plot device, they are a character in and of themselves. They are presented to Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), like a dismembered mouse left by the family cat. Difference being that the cat’s offering is out of love. The films are something far more sinister. A self-serving delivery of evil. The films are grotesque echoes of things past, and things to come.
Halloween is the time for spine-chilling terror and Sinister is a perfect expression for the season.

Pro: This movie had superior spook factor
Pro: Lots of little detials weaved in requiring you to pay attention
Pro: Ending is not what you expect it to be
Con: The story line with the Son was unnecessary
Con: The whining wife
Con: Ending is not what you expect it to be
It was really nice to see Ethan Hawke again, even if this role portrays him as a family man who doesn't appear to give a rats ***about the safety of his family. Go see it!
