It was a very slow build up. Ethan played an ok drunk dad. Here's what I thought was scary: the thunder storm at the movies, the stalker white van parked next to me, the lightening outside & the car driving on the wrong side of the road.

Movie had a perfect balance beween horror and storyline.Absent from most recent horror movies.Usually 95% would be spent on Gore and 5% story building.

First downfall is no one ever wants to turn on a freaking light. All the suspense happening is in a dark house fully capable of being lit. Second is that while I usually like Ethan Hawk..his drinking and closed off personallity annoyed the hell out of me. The scorpion/snake/dog/ symbols were used so randomly and just had no impact on building the fear. Aside from a few loud thumps..there were no shocking moments save for the lawn mower scene. It was the last 30 minutes that totally ruined the movie with the strupid unscarey kids all putting their fingers to their mouths and saying shhhhhhhh...it had an element of creepiness but that lasted 4 seconds. WHen he burns the film and projector and it shoiws up again in tact is where I was wishing I was home pounding my thumb with a hammer. WASTE OF TIME

this movie when it first came out, i wasnt expecting much but finally decided to see it with some friends and was pretty pleased with how it built up to get the ending it did. i overall enjoyed the film and just thought one thing in my head when he first finds the films, is a title one of the other reviewers posted. "Ethan Hawke watches a film" haha.

This is a great horror movie that really builds up the suspense and gives you those jump-out-of-your-seat moments. Very creepy and jarring ending. We thoroughly enjoyed it. 'Old School' suspenseful horror at its best.
