Unless you are the kind of Sherlock Holmes film fan who can only accept Basil Rathbone as the great "consulting detective," you should see this movie. Downey and Law play off against each other very well in both action scenes and humorous moments. It is refreshing that so much of the action takes place outside of sooty old London, making for a more colorful movie than # 1. That also means that we also see only a fleeting glimpse of Holmes' favorite comic foil, Inspector Lestrade, though, and I missed him some. If I have one criticism, it is that the movie runs longer than it probably needs to be. But when you can have two adults and two teenagers go to the same movie together and all come out happy with the experience, you know you're onto something.

I liked the first Sherlock Holmes movie, but it didn't really blow me away. In fact, it wasn't that memorable to be honest. I'm happy to say that the sequel, A GAME OF SHADOWS, is far superior. The chemistry between Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. is some of the best every to hit the silver screen. Both are superb and I think it's safe to say that Downey Jr. is one of the best actors alive today. It wasn't a two-man show, though. Both Jared Harris (Professor Moriarty) and Stephen Fry (Mycroft Holmes) steal the scenes when they're on camera.
I felt the movie had just the right mix of action and detective work. The story was huge and the plot held major implications for the entire world, but it never jumped off the rails into implausibility. I found it much less confusing and complex than the first film. The script was well put together all the way around and the dialogue was fantastic. This is one of the rare instances of a sequel surpassing its original.

At no point was I ever bored or lost in the movie, and it was smart. I have seen this movie twice in the last two days, and am going again tomorrow. This is a must see movie for any Sherlock Holmes fan. I have always been a huge Jeremy Brett fan, he played Sherlock for the PBS series from the mid eighties untill his death in 1995. I already loved Robert Downey Jr from the Iron Man movies...but now he has created a Sherlock Holmes that Jeremy Brett would approve of. I think that what helps RDJ make a great Sherlock is the fact that Jude Law makes a great Dr Watson and they play off of each other.

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows is a very good movie. It's entertaining, funny, and well written. If you enjoyed the first movie, you will enjoy the sequel as well (if not more so). I found Game of Shadows to be much easier to follow, and a much more coherent story line than the first movie. Part of the might have to do with Professor Moriarty's addition to the mix. If you're looking for a retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes, you likely won't find it here. But for pure fun, as well a clever and interesting story, look no further than Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
