SHADOWLANDS = Amazingly Powerful True Life Story
Richard Attenborough's handling of the movie version of a play by William Nicholson about the relationship between C.S. Lewis and American poet Joy Gresham is nothing short of exquisite. Not so much a "chick flick", this warm and rewarding film deals with the real life fears and hopelessness one must endure when having fallen in love with someone with a fatal illness. Beautifully enacted by a high-powered cast including Anthony Hopkins (in a stellar performance as Lewis) and Debra Winger as the ill-fated Joy. Ravishingly photographed and meticulously detailed production rises this to the level of true artistic achievement! Do have the tissue handy though as the last third of the film is as poignant and tear-inducing as they come...
