I was a little skeptical about Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney, but will be the first to admit that I was blown away by his performance. Usually, when I'm watching someone portray a well known real-life person, I am very aware of the actor "acting". After just a few moments, Tom Hanks was not on the screen. i was watching Walt Disney himself.
I love Emma Thompson, she was just superb. Everyone in the cast was spot on. I particularly was moved by Paul Giamatti as her driver.
This film was touching, funny, sad, bittersweet and infuriating, all at the same time. The story behind the story was heartbreaking - I was not prepared for that at all.
Whether or not you are a fan of Mary Poppins, you should see this movie. It is a fascinating glimpse of how the process works, and the perserverance that Mr. Disney had to bring this classic book to life.

Any Disney lover will enjoy every bit of this movie from the two-finger point to Walt's cough. Aside from the relationship between P.L. Travers and Walt Disney, we get to see how Mrs. Travers' childhood shaped her writing and adverse reaction to Walt's desire to make Mary Poppins story into a movie. I will never be able to watch Mary Poppins the same without seeing the thought and work that went into every detail in it. I am so glad this movie was made. We now have a window into the past to look at how enthusiastic Walt was about his work and what a crucial role the Sherman brothers played, figuratively and literally.

It was quite a good movie, much more emotional and touching than I expected from a Disney movie. Emma Thompson was great, and I love that the real tapes are played during the credits.

If the opportunity presents itself these next few days, I would highly recommend that you and your family go see Walt Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks".
I hardly ever write movie reviews. In fact, most movies to me are short of a review. However, after seeing this one tonight, I just could not get it off of my mind. I count it all joy when I can go into a theater and see a movie that is from start to finish - mostly clean, family-friendly, inspirational, and full of purpose.
This movie is just that and so much more. Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) and PL Travers (Emma Thompson) are brilliant in their roles, but based on the fact that the story did actually happen, presents a whole level of new Disney magic. It is an amazing story that will have you laughing, singing, and crying all at the same time....all while being in wonder of the fact that the story is real and amazing and well, as Mary Poppins would say or not say, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
