A Good but not Great Film

By Blue Baron

Over all this was a good attempt at a war film. In the first Saints and Soldiers they tried to rewrite history and make the Malm├ędy Massacre of American prisoners by the SS look like it was the Americans' fault. In this one they may have stayed closer to fact. It is said to be based on a true story, but the ending is a bit hard to believe, and the story line is very predictable. The acting is ok, except the French girl loses her French accent and sounds like a western American (most Europeans learn British English) by the end of the film. Technically it is well done for a film that obviously was shot on a small budget. Uniforms and small arms look good, they have what looks like an M18 tank destroyer and very good reproductions of a SdKfz 251, Panzer III and an ME109. The buildings in the film are where the film really shows its small budget, they look American, especially a post World War II steel storage shed that is supposed to be a barn. Never the less, it was fun to watch.

A lot of 'Bang' for its limited 'Bucks'

This third installment of the franchise is good. For a low budget film they delivered a lot of bang for their bucks. Is it top tier acting, directing, sets, costumes and writing? Not so much. None the less, it is a courageous and worthwhile effort, quite different from the first two installments, each of which stand on their own and none of the technical limitations are enough to glaringly distract from the viewing experience. It is by far and away better than a boat load of big budget Hollywood offerings costing 50 times more. Unfortunately due to it's limited release the return will be small, relatively speaking. The films this team produces are a throwback to the early days of Hollywood where patriotism was not a dirty word. A time when you knew at trip to the movies would not subject you and your children, parents or grandparents to an hour or two of profanity and vulgarity. I hope they earn enough that they can continue to bring us more compelling, wholesome entertainment.
