Why are animated movies all becoming musicals?

Rio 2 was ok, though not as good as the first. The bigger question in my mind is why so many animated films are now musicals. (See Happyfeet 2, Madagascar 2 and 3, etc.) The musical numbers in Rio 2 are clever and entertaining, but they all look the same. It gets boring after a while. Maybe the studios are using the results of focus groups. Or perhaps, my cynical side says, studios like having half of the scenes be music-and-dance numbers, because it allows them to avoid having to come up with compelling, more engaging stories. It worked for Frozen, but not for Rio 2.

Not nearly as good as the original but worth a look. Wait till it shows up at the cheap theaters though. Wish I had not paid full price for this movie. Will not buy the DVD/Blu-ray when it comes out.

Songs weren't nearly as good as the first one and it wasn't nearly as funny. Both of our boys got bored about half way through it.

Nothing ground breaking here. Young children will find it entertaining. Story is predictable. Jokes are one liners and sight gags. Best to see a matinee or wait for video. Well, it's a sequel...
