BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL

I don't know what the critics are whining about - like usual they have bombed an excellent and entertaining movie. I liked this better than the original - it's updated and more believable. A fun ride - I saw it twice. I do agree with one viewer here who complained about the shaky camera work - mounting a camera on somebody's head then having them go running through the woods just makes me carsick. I had to take dramamine to watch this movie. However, I loved it enough to go back!

A good adaptation and update of a personal favorite

I saw the first one when it premiered in the early 1980's and it has been one of my favorites. I was curious to see what they might do with the premise. It was very entertaining. Chris Hemsworth was great as Jed and Adrianne Palicki as Toni were excellent. Brett Cullen was awesome as Ted Eckert, the father of Jed and Matt- he did a lot with a very small role. Josh Peck was not particularly outstanding as Matt - he looked way too young next to Hemsworth and lacked the conviction. The whole "gotta rescue Erica" subplot was distracting. Josh Hutcherson as Robert was a bit wasted - either make him the tech guru with significant contribution or let him go stark raving mad like C. Thomas Howell did in the original. The updating required due to technology and warfare changes was generally well done. It is too bad they did not release it with the Chinese as the bad guys as filmed - a foreign policy "bow" they did not need to make.

Remake of existing movie

This movie was poorly deleloped when compared with the original although the special effects were better. The movie left too many unanswered questions and many of the incidents were unrealistic. Russia and North korea invading the US? Red China I would believe but North Korea an Russia lack a sufficient population for the task.

Had potential

For starters Chris Hemsworth - Jed Eckert, was the only decent actor in this entire movie, Josh Peck - Matt Eckert was so obnoxious and the character development of Matt Eckert was so terrible that every time I had to sit through his teenage angst, high school lover, throw his friends under the bus, garbage acting I got overly enraged and wanted to walk out. Far cry from Charlie Sheen. Another part greatly disliked by me, was the many rediculous plot holes. "We know where they are, so lets carpet bomb them while they are under ground and not even surround the place so that 90% of them can escape". "Oh, lets place a tracker on one of them, then attack only one of them in the building, let all the others escape, then not follow them with air support so that they have enough time to realize the tracker was placed and leave the tracked man behind" " I was a marine, that means that I have special forces knowledge on Russia and can tell by what cover they are wearing that they are spetznaz"
