Reaching For The . . . EXIT!

Biographical drama about a dull, dreary and self-absorbed, alcoholic and anemic-looking poet wanna-be who achieves elitist success on the back of, and at the ultimate expense of, her Brazilian real-world over-achiever sponsor/lover (whose life story appeared to be far more constructive and interesting). If non-stop syrupy minor-key strings wailing to a somberly, depressing, and excruciatingly slow-moving story-line is your idea of how to invest 2 hours of your life, you'll hit the jackpot with this joyless requiem. Best part of the movie: the white early-'50s Jag.

Miranda Otto gives the performance of a lifetime in this incredibly well- written and well-directed movie. Great themes - loss, the personal cost of artistic determination, what it was like to be gay in the fifties and sixties, an early gay family - all delivered without cliche, and supported by a fantastic score and stunning photography. As for Brazilian actress, Gloria Pires, her performance is a revelation. Treat Wiliams is here too in a far too short but wonderfully rendered cameo. You will travel to Brazil and back for the cost of a movie ticket!

I went to see this movie because it was playing at the Paris theatre and they typically show very good films, and this did not disappoint. I did not know of the poet for whom this film was about, but the three main characters were brilliantly cast, the film was interesting, the characters were well developed, the story was extremely well told and the acting was superb! I felt like I actually knew these people ...and it reverberates.

Reaching is not a sensationalist movie but a beautifully made film, realistic about unconventional ******* relationships, political, class and cultural differences, and the struggle to write poetry and survive. Take your friends and go see it.
