    the raven

    by eal123

I thought this was a good movie. It is not a horror movie but a mystery. There is some gore. It kept the suspense and had a surprise ending.

An old school murder mystery with the great John Cusack

The backdrop of Baltimore in the 1800's sets the tone of this underrated murder mystery. Cusack plays the part perfectly, think Sherlock Holmes without the annoying traits. He manages to come across as a tortured soul with a sense of humor. Once his bride to be goes missing the movie shifts into overdrive until the final scene. A bit of a slow start butthere is plenty of character development and the movie plays out perfectly. With several gory murder scenes, I can see how this missed out on a PG-13 rating. The relationship between Poe and the investigator and his bride's father is worth the extra running time to appreciate the change that occurs from beginning to end. Just wish Cusack was willing to put out more movies as he is one of the best actors to come around in our time.

    THRILLING

Anyone who is a fan of Edgar Allen Poe would definitely love this film but even if you don't know much about Poe you would enjoy it... it's not crazy or farfetched... everything could happen and the references to his life are quite accurate... it's exciting and great acting and a little gruesome but not over kill... it definitely makes me want to go read some more of his stories that's for sure...

    Quoth "The Raven" Nevermore

    by

Not that I expected to walk out of this movie with a newly discovered sense of life, or inspirational quotes, or even to be thoroughly impressed with it, it was expectedly macabre. Cusack, who I love, was good and his fiance is beautiful, but the movie kind of just happens. There's nothing memorable. There's nothing gripping. There's nothing drawing you in at all, really. That said, it passes the "not a bad way to kill time" test so long as you wait to Redbox it and not waste $10 at a theater.

    Excellant but a bit gorey

    by indjeff

Loved this murder mystery. I wasn't able to pick out the killer until it was revealed...always a plush for these kind of movies. Do watch out for the blood and gore as it is excessive in this movie. Otherwise, a great movie.

John Cusack as Poe is GENIUS!

When I first saw the previews for The Raven, I knew I had to see it. I'm a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan, and I figured I'd give this movie a shot, even though it's not completely historically accurate (obviously). I'll be honest, I was a bit nervous to see anyone play Poe, since he was such a complex person with such a unique personality. But, lo and behold, John Cusack was chosen for the role and it was spot on. He absolutely nailed it--who would have guessed? The movie itself was great. Very gruesome since they followed Poe's short stories to a T, but also a good bit of action and romance. The movie constantly keeps you guessing about what the murderer will do next and is full of twists and turns. I definitely recommend it to the other Poe fans out there and anyone who's a fan of John Cusack or action/horror films. Not for those with an uneasy stomach though, so do not see if you don't like the sight of blood.

Sherlock Holmes without the bullet time

Good movie, John Cussack gave a strong performance although he did seem to be channeling Nicholas Cage at times. The rest of the cast is also good and pace was just about right.

The final twist was the only letdown but not enough to spoil the movie and certainly worth seeing.

    Great Movie

    by Pancho

Dismiss the negative reviews below, this was an excellent, entertaining film with great performances by all. Cusack was spot on as Poe...and the one to really watch is Luke Evans who stole the show. Definitely not a film for kids (extremely graphic in some of the deaths), but well worth the price of admission.

I enjoyed it as a work of fiction, not fact.

If you have been a life-long fan of Poe and your expectations for this movie are to see a factual representation of his life, you will be disappointed. If you go to see this movie knowing that it is a highly fictionalized story revolving around Poe as one of the main characters then you may be pleasantly surprised. I went to pre-screen this because my 14-year old has been begging to go see it. Even though I knew it was a work of fiction I still had a preconceived notion that I would hate it. I was pleasantly surprised and I actually enjoyed it. There are times the story begins to drag because you have already figured out "who done it" but then it gets interesting again.

As for taking a 14-year old, yes I will take him. I will warn him that there are 3 or 4 scenes that are extremely bloody and gory but the truth is that the blood and gore do not overwhelm the movie. Go see it as a fictionalized murder mystery and you may enjoy it as well.

Not a factual account of Poe's life!

    Saw the Raven 05062012

    by Hawk688

Saw the Raven and it was a well written movie. The story line holds together from begining to end and there is plenty of suspense and mystery to hold your interest and keep you watching to find out the end. Great Movie and a good solid cast.

    A Great Movie!

Though it was a little long, something I didn't mind but a few of the people I took were a little unhappy with, I enjoyed this movie. It is not a normal you can sit down and figure out the person doing the crime right off nor is it a well why the hell was it that person either at the end. It kept you guessing without the cheap trick of not showing you the person or giving you a lame reason at the end. Also, it was so well written and brought to the screen, the casting couldn't have been better for the movie. Not once did I sit there and think, "This would have been just a little better if not perfect if so-and-so had been in it instead". But, be warned for those that want another of John Cusack movie, this is not it. The closest I can say it comes is his role in 1408 style verses his normal line of staring roles. He was masterful in this movie and makes a great Poe for this era. Please go and enjoy this movie!

    Great Thriller!

I have always liked Poe, but always hated poetry! This movie was a great thriller and used all of his famous poems in the killings! It is a movie that you should see!

    Ok.

    by fiddyjr

Being from Maryland and I know a little more than the average joe about Poe, it was ok. Decent storyline. Wish they could have explained each story a litte better, but it's Hollywood.. I'd watch it again

    Classic Cusack

John Cusack is classic in his role of Poe. Just creepy enough to pull it off. Not too bloody, just enough to make a point. If you like John Cusack, or Luke Evans it's a must see. If you like a good mystery, or the Edgar Allan Poe stories, it a must see as well.

MiscSarcasm Just watched The Raven. I don't get why this film got such harsh reviews, it really wasn't bad at all. Surely worth a watch.
