maggie smith doesn't let you down!

this is a delightful insight into old age. We all will get there and this made me laugh, cry and feel with all those people. Maybe since I am on the doorstep, I will be more understanding. You should take your adult children to see it, especially if they are starting to get impatient with you.

Great feel good movie involving song and geezers

Everyone acted superbly. The foursome were very strong, but I have to accord kudos as well to Sheridan Smith (Dr. Cogan), Gwyneth Jones (Anne Langley), Michael Gambon (Cedric Livingston), Trevor Peacock (George), among many others. The pacing was good, scenery fabulous (maybe a bit overdone, but in keeping with the pomp required by the movie content), plot (laced with some real life musicians and singers) was predictable but still captivating. The only possible flaw was that everything was so neatly tied together at the end

    More Marigold Hotel

    by mab300

Maggie Smith plays precisely same character as in Hotel Marigold. No surprise. It's all she plays these days ( albeit well), and Quartet is the same movie by another name.

    Don't bother

Great cast but the movie acts as old and slow as the members. Subject matter, though interesting, was not worth the attention Hoffman paid to it. If this was an attempt of saying that- just because you get old you don't have to give up- I think there many better ways to say it.

    Charming - GREAT CAST!

    by

Yes, of course I was going to see a film about aging opera singers, ESPECIALLY with the cast in this film. Seriously? Maggie Smith? Tom Courtenay? Pauline Collins? Michael Gambon? And Billy Connolly???? They are very simply wonderful, the dynamics are irresistable (as is Billy Connolly, but I've always had a thing for baritones, and he nails the type brilliantly). This is a charming, quiet film which deserves more attention. The music is wonderful, and although none of the actors are actually singers (with the wonderful exception of Dame Gwyneth Jones!), the director has handled that very well. I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves opera, great acting, and a good story.

    wonderfully filmed

I loved the scenery, the photography, the acting, and the humor. I thought it was a bit draggy from time to time, and predictable. But that was ok with me because the charms of the movie outweigh a few slow moments and predictable end. Using actual performance artists (retired) in the movie was terrific. How talented they all are! And the scene where Maggie Smith is walking in the woods with her former love, coming upon a young couple who immediately exclaimed they were "not doing anything" and Maggie says "neither were we" was a great little nod between generations. I love to see these amazing actors doing such fine work.....give me more!

cristianoloschi Watched Dustin Hoffman movie Quartet last night. Didn't like it. Not a drama, not a comedy and with, what felt like, an over the top acting
