Back to Bond Basics
When we were hit with Casino Royale, the Bond franchise had been revitalized. The tougher, grittier Bond was now twice as B**a** and less dependent on his endless supply of gadgets. It came as a happy surprise especially to those of us who questioned the choice of Daniel Craig in the beginning. In Quantum of Solace, Craig does it again. He has not lost his touch by any means, and the movie is truly riveting. However, as good as Quantum of Solace is, do not expect to see Casino Royale over again. Bond has gotten back to his basics in some areas. It felt like a classic Bond movie interpreted for modern audiences. I think the best way to describe it is by the work of the directors. Casino Royale was directed by Martin Campbell who also directed an earlier Bond film... Goldeneye. Who could forget Goldeneye? Quantum of Solace was directed by Marc Forster, whose work is also seen in The Kite Runner, Stranger than Fiction, and Finding Neverland. Great director, not the work he is used to.
