Premium B plus

Rode my new single speed to the theatre, got there twenty minutes after the stated start time - it was still in previews. The problem with bike messengers is they are so passionate about the wrong things. Not career choice so much as who they choose as enemies. Cab drivers are really in the same boat, customers are generally sympathetic, but email and messenger companies are decimating the ranks of the urban bike messenger. Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks the same as Wilie as he did on Rosanne and Third Rock From the Sun. He really seems to have a lot of fun with the role. Stay a minute or so into the credits to see him smiling after landing in the back window of a cab, with blood running down his arm, a real-life injury that required thirty-one stitches. Michael Shannon in the Wiley Coyote role as Detective Bobby Monday also has a lot of fun and does a wonderful job serving as the pivot for the moral dilemma. The problem with these 'B' movies is they depend on no one calling police

I thought it was going to be a messenger and some package blah, blah, blah...It was such a good story line and amazing footage of riding through the busy streets of NY! Loved it!

Better than I expected

This is a pretty much by-the-numbers film and you can see what's going to happen long before it happens. But there are some better than average things going on, including some alternate action sequences, some route sequences, and flashbacks that show you the same situation from a variety of perspectives.

It might not be art

Premium Rush might not count as Art in the sense that a Peter Greenaway, Michelangelo Antonioni, or Bernardo Bertolucci movie might, but rest assured, you will enjoy this one a whole lot more. There are some minor plausibility issues in the courier industry-insider scenes, but as a whole, this movie zips with perfect narrative force. And then there's the bike riding scenes. Adrenaline, humour, and intricacy blend for some of the best movie action I've seen in decades. Character development errs on the shallow side, but this hardly matters for a caper flick.

When this movie stops rushing, it's a relief because you can take a breath. Michael Shannon is great! If you really want a rush, see this movie.
