Boo!

This movie was a total flop. Also, I was so highly offended by the trailer for the movie BoxTrolls (which discussed "families" as including same sex marriages) prior to our movie. As a parent, I expect to have the right to decide when and where I discuss these social issues with my children - NOT as a captive audience for an advertisement for a movie. I never write reviews for movies, even when they are bad. But this total remake of Cars coupled with the highly offensive trailer prior to made me feel the need to comment. Mandi.

This is one of the best animated features I have seen in a while. Great story line and characters. Kept the kiddos entertained the entire movie.

Didn't live up to the Cars dynasty

My 3 year old son is obsessed with Cars. Although Planes has some funny and lovable moments, my son, who can usually last through multiple movies back to back, got bored after about 30 minutes and when we walked out of the theater (a die cast Lightning Mcqueen still clutched in his little fist) he could not remember any of the character's names. It's much harder to connect with airplanes than cars since we all dread the airport, most of us fear flying, and very few people know the technical lingo. It was not a total waste of time, El Chu is adorable, and Dottie is a bad-***mechanic, which is a nice contrast to the other two female characters who are just "shapely" racers without much soul. Overall, Planes does not compare to Cars or Cars 2, and I would suggest seeing Despicable Me 2 for a second time instead of seeing Planes.

Cute formula movie

Okay, CARS broke new ground, being the first in the series. PLANES is following the same formula for story & characters (except there's no Mater character). But they do a good job. Funny characters, nice settings. With this movie, Val Kilmer has been in Top Gun twice. Once as a pilot, once as a plane.

"Planes" was a hit for my 4-year-old, but for me it was just meh.

The overall message was positive. Any "believe in yourself" themed movie is a great message to impart upon kids of all ages. The characters were mostly entertaining. My 4-year-old rooted for the hero, Dusty. She struggled a bit with the 2nd and third legs of the race, paying attention. She rallied, however, and got into the excitement that finally built up. The car/ plane character from Germany was difficult to understand by me, and my 4-year-old was completely lost with him. I chuckled to hear John Ratzenberger giving out directions again, ala Finding Nemo. I did not like the" those who can't do, teach" line. As a teacher, one who enjoys Disney movies, and a mother to three daughters who love Disney t.v., movies, and merchandise, I hope that this is considered by the franchise in the future. I am about to spend 3 days in Walt Disney World, and am not happy about that line at all. How about creativity over cliche' next time? So, what's next for Disney? "Boats"? "Trains"?
