Perhaps the best stoner comedy ever
As a film Pineapple Express is decent enough. It didn't surpass my expectations, but it didn't fall short of them either. Many can agree that it was a hilarious enough performance from James Franco, performing a less glamorous role than we're used to seeing him in, and Seth & David's writing was like it always is; semi-real and funny enough. The story follows almost exactly the same formula as its predecessor Superbad; two guys, conflict, escalation, falling out, bromance, one literally carrying the other to safety, and the morning after. This however worked a second time in a different setting. I don't think the formula is old yet. After all many good directors have reused the basic formula from their previous movies succesfully (e.g. The Coen Brothers with Blood Simple and Fargo or Woody Allen with Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point). As a film it ranks somewhere near the top of the middle. As a stoner comedy, it ranks top, even beating Half Baked & Up in Smoke.
