Every now and then, there's a movie that helps redefine what a kids movie should be like; 'The Goonies' and 'Gremlins' both come to mind. 'Paranorman' joins these movies and serves as a reminder that sometimes a kids movie can also double as a thrilling adventure for adults and children alike.
LAIKA studios, who made 'Coraline' a few years back, brings stop motion to a new height with this film which currently sits in a CGI-riddled featherbed of children's films released this summer. How is this one any different?
It doesn't pander to children. Sure, there's a few sight gags and it's visually stimulating, but it also has a lot of heart. Films like this make it clear to children that life isn't perfect and it wears its heart boldly on its sleeve particularly during the third act which serves as a fitting "don't judge a book by its cover story" without being a PSA.
Final thought: if you want to try to introduce horror to your kids, this is a clever - and fun - stepping stone.

Witless plot, dialogue, and characters had the quality, charm, and entertainment value of an annoying saturday morning cartoon. The last five minutes were redeeming and had value, but not enough to make up for the 95% you have to suffer through to fi-nal-ly get there.

I really enjoyed this movie. I usually make my husband take the kids to animated movies but it was my turn and I'm happy I got to see ParaNorman. It was scarier than I thought but both my 6 and 9 year old LOVED it. Of course, within reason they think Zombies are totally fun. I would not take a sensitive child to see this as it is a bit scarier in parts but rest assured all ends well and there are a couple of strong, positive messages about treating people kindly and embracing your uniqueness.
Definitely see this movie if you like animated films or mild scares!

Movie was ok till the damn end When the Jock says he has a boyfriend... that ruined the experience for me I had a 5yr young & 8yr young Who asked me "why he has a boyfriend?!!"
Damn I shouldve read the reviews before taking my nephew and someone else child!
I really want my money back!!
Im tired of the underlining adult themes in Kids' movies!! ...ie Shrek has alot of homosexual tones and things goin on! I had to bring it to my principal's attention so she would stop showing it to elementary kids!

This movie is not suitable for children...foul language, bullying, inappropriate sexual innuendo. Horrified that I took my boys, 9 and 5 yrs old, to see it.
