Expected a better movie.

The plot is very weak. For some reason, most of the dialogue is screamed at you, which makes this an unnecessarily loud movie. All the action shots happen at night, so it's hard to see what's happening. The robots look real, but the underwater shots are not convincing enough. This movie has all the ingredients for a great movie, but it falls short.

Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots!

We went to see "Pacific Rim" at an IMAX 3D theater which, despite the higher cost, I think is the best way to see such a summer popcorn movie. Overall, I would give the movie a "7 1/2" out of 10. But for those who love giant monsters and robots battling it out, it's definitely a "10." I was glad to see a lot of pop culture references in the film, everything from Johnny Sokko and Giant Robot to Japanese giant monster movies (some of the looked a lot like kaiju from the original "Ultraman" series...) to Gigantor to Evangelion and even a bit of "Independence Day.". The battle scenes were loud, big and terrific. The story was so-so and the film really could have used an A-List actor to give the non-action scenes some real ACTING! Seems like they must have filmed this in Aussie as nearly everyone had an Australian accent---or were trying to hide it. So great SFX, lots of fun, really bad acting. The film really sets the bar high for "Godzilla" in 2014.

Wanted to like it so much more than I did

This is a movie worth seeing on a big screen if only because the movie is about epic sized machines battling epic sized mosters. I was impressed by the CG for both the robots and monsters. I also loved the story development for the monsters, where they come from, why they are attacking. The development of the human characters however was a little lacking for me, and I felt like several scenes in the movie were too much like other invasion movies that have impressed me much more. So bottom line, if you want just some great battle scenes, this movie has it. If you're looking for more gripping character plot, not so much.

Better than the transformer movies...

I feel if you like the first Transformers movie then you will like this movie. In addition to the cool visual affects and fight scenes it does take you back to the Godzilla movie days (yes, i'm older than errr 30) style which for me is a good thing. Don't expect a great script or a challenging plot but instead a full action movie with decent acting. I'll see it again at some point when it hits cable tv...maybe even rent it.

Worth seeing....but a mixed bag

First off, best CGI I think I've ever seen. You really get a sense of the enormity of the robot machines and the monsters. The concept of a pair of robot "drivers" needing to sort of mind-meld ("drifting") was interesting. Plot was pretty good...although more back-story on how they came to build these robots and the tech behind them would've been helpful. Has all the makings of a good prequel. But.....when will they learn to write interesting dialogue for these sorts of movies? Much of the human element was very predictable....the "rallying" speech from the marshall to the troops (president's speech in Independence Day?).....the inevitable conflict between two of the male characters. The best acting performance probably came from the little asian girl in one of the flashback sequences...she was amazing and heartbreaking. This movie is definitely worth seeing on the big screen as long as you can get past the lack of creative and believable dialog.
