I did not know what to expect but would go see it again just for the effects and the way the movie brought you in. I felt like I was in a different world. So beautiful! Even without the storyline I would have enjoyed it. Loved it!

OZ The Great and Powerful was a must see in IMAX 3-D. The land comes to life in the 3-D version. It is well acted. The cinematography is excellent. The storyline is very believable in this prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Special effects make this movie. I would recommend anybody over the age of 13 to see it. I feel that there are some parts of the movie that are not suitable for younger viewers.

The graphic portion of the film was everything genius could possibly be - truly. I happened to see this in IMAX 3-D which I think really showed off some of the best scenes in the movie. However - the acting in the film was very, very poor. Franco carried the team throughout the entire film - all of the witch characters relied heavily on their looks. One very unfortunate 'feature' of this film was the need for them to scare you to death with absolutely no reason as to why. A good 'gotcha' here and there in any film definitely heightens your emotional attachment to it and such - but this movie just went for some very poor scare-the-crap-out-of-you moments several times which actually didn't help the story at all, it actually almost confused you because you were so shocked they went there, it would take you a minute to resolve what was going on again to stick with the story. This is an OZ movie for sure - the basic storyline was there - but not really meant for the typical OZ audience!!!

Above Average but Not Perfect

This prelude to the classic "Wizard of OZ" is a beautiful and fairly well acted story on the origin of the Wizard and how he came to Oz. Seen in IMax 3D the movie looked gorgeous and the 3D effects were more of the Avatar model -- draw the viewer in not throw things out at the viewer (though there is some of that). The imprint of the director, Sam Raimi, is unmistakable with his attention to story and story detail as well as a bit of visual slap stick thrown in. There are also unmistakable but subtle references as little treats not only to the "Wizard of Oz" but also to the previous works of Sam Raimi himself. However, if you do not know either, they are not obtrusive or confusing. Franco tend to be Franco, but his onscreen/offscreen persona works in this role. Weisz and Williams give subtle and nuanced roles for the adults and colorful enough for the children. The only weaknes is Kunis, who has a very difficult role and story to play, and is not up to the task of the last third.
