Franco was a terrible choice as Oz and delivered a forgettable thin performance. The plot was cute but unsuspenseful as anyone who saw the original new who would live and how it would turn out. Strictly for kids. This did not bridge any age groups as far as I could see. The new Alice In Wonderland was more interesting plotwise and better acted although just as pretty to view. Its sad that so much creativity in terms of animation, costuming, etc. is wasted on old stories and themes instead of newly created plots and concepts. An example of this level of craftmanship well used would be Avatar. It will make some money, but all this effort should really be toward much loftier goals than building already established brands and entrenched stories.

The effects were great. The characters were very memorable. Children of all ages will enjoy the magical adventure to Oz. The story linked most everything from the original Wizard with Judy Garland. The only thing I didn't see was the story behind the "Ruby Slippers".
I will buy the DVD when available and enjoy the movie again and again.

3 amazing women, a fine supporting cast and quality special effects do not make up for the fact that James Franco does not have a lick of acting ability. I'm hard pressed to think of a worse choice than him.

Fell asleep. Special effects were over the top. So was Franco's over-playing his role.
How come Glinda had no-lingering effects of being repeatedly zapped with green lightning? Oz mugged like he was going for a cross between Clark Gable and Gene Wilder. Overall, it seemed like a high tech melding of The Wizard of Oz and Wicked but with none of the charm and none of the great music...

Although visually stunning, this film suffers from the terrible miscasting of James Franco as Oz which dooms it from the very beginning. I really wanted to care about the Oz character and really wanted to feel his transformation but at the end, I didn't care. The writing/story is pretty clunky but I feel this could have been less of an issue with a more likable Oz. Some of the animation/live action didn't mesh very well so there is a nagging reminder of the filmmaker's hand. Michelle Williams brings vulnerability and pragmatism to the role of Glinda. China doll and Findlay the monkey are the hidden treasures among the cast. The movie was okay but it could have been so much better.
