Great movie and not just for kids. I especially liked the monkey voiced by Zach Braff. It was cool to see what they came up with for the back story of the wizard and the three witches.

Powerful Message from Oz the Great and Powerful

Loved the story and the message of this movie. Great screenplay by David Lindsay-Abair (The Rabbit Hole). The detail in the visuals is pretty spectacular. Huge shout-out to Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Zach Braff. Mila Kunis and James Franco were mis-cast, but did OK. As with many older Disney films, I hated the fact that the actors who are Jewish play a monkey and a witch, and that the only people of color in the film are servants and guards. This type of story telling works on a subconscious level to reinforce social stereotypes. Still, overall, the general message of the film that goodness trumps greatness, that everything you need to be good is already inside you, and that working together can accomplish great things are great messages. We need more films with these types of messages - yay Disney!!

This review is on the 3D aspect of the movie.

First, let me just say that if I was rating the movie itself, I would've rated it a "Go." With that being said, here is what I thought about the 3D aspect of this movie. This movie is meant to be seen in 3D, period. It was that good. Sam Raimi intended the audience to watch it in 3D, and it shows throughout the movie, with well planned camera shots and angles. Not only is the use of depth present, in scenery and landscapes, there are also plenty of "pop-out' moments. It's not in the sense of things coming within arms reach of the viewer but in the sense that you can tell the objects are flying off screen, or sometimes at you, adding the "before the window" dimension to the film. At times it even felt like I was on a ride. There were no problems with the brightness either. I was able to make out everything in the movie. Overall, I think it's definitely worth the few extra dollars to see this movie in 3D. No question. I actually want to see it again!

So beautiful to look at, so boring to watch

There are a few really captivating, emotionally engaging, beautifully-acted scenes. Then there's the rest of the movie. It's incredibly slow and expository. I found myself just waiting for something to happen. James Franco is adequate, but the women are far superior, and the movie is completely stolen by the China Doll. It is really gorgeous to look at and almost worth the price of admission just to SEE it. As a designer, the opening titles were incredibly captivating to me.

Miss this but see the original and /or Wicked

Fell asleep. Special effects were over the top. So was Franco's over-playing his role. How come Glinda had no-lingering effects of being repeatedly zapped with green lightning? Oz mugged like he was going for a cross between Clark Gable and Gene Wilder. Overall, it seemed like a high tech melding of The Wizard of Oz and Wicked but with none of the charm and none of the great music...
