    Oz The Good and Entertaining

    by MedRed

Oz The Great and Powerful has great things going for it. The visuals were vibrant and beautiful. The CGI is really good. This movie has the best use of 3D I've seen outside of an animated film (better than Avatar). It's worth an IMAX 3D ticket.

The supporting actors (especially the CGI characters) are excellent. Their dialogue, believability, and comedic relief are top notch. They make this movie very playful and fun!

So what's not so great? The main characters. Their acting, dialogue, and interactions come off as acting 101. There is very little character development. Franco's character comes off as one dimensional to a fault. Mila Kunis is not believable in her role at all.

It's a shame that the main actors do not capture the whimsy of the original Oz movie. Despite this, this movie is worth seeing. Just don't expect a masterpiece on par with its inspiration.

There are no scenes during or after the credits.

    Great 3D Effects

    by

I'm not sure if it will be the blockbuster they're hoping for but then I thought John Carter would be successful... Anyways, a bit slow in some parts but overall a good movie with sometimes great scenery. I enjoyed the cast--especially the good flying monkey. I do recomend it for kids and families although the flying baboons are pretty heavy monsters. Strong suggestion: See if the theater has regullar, square lensed 3D glasses. The "cool" special OZ glasses are round and made my eyes hurt. Luckily I had a regullar pair of glasses and it made a big difference.

A fantastic beginning to the Oz story.

OK, to answer critics. If you're looking for action and explosions every second, go see something else. If you like the original Wizard of Oz, and you understand that this is a pre-quel based on the book of how the Wizard got to Oz and came to be who he is, then this is a fantastic family friendly movie that you will absolutely love! I saw this twice yesterday and picked up on a lot of great things that I missed the first time around.

James Franco is great as a sleazeball magician who has to find the good in himself and help others. Zack Braff steals the show as the extremely funny and heartfelt monkey, and the story of how the Witches came to be who they are, and the deception involved is fantastic. It's another great journey down the yellow brick road without all the singing. I really enjoyed the dramatic take and the visual effects are incredible. A small tribute I almost missed is that the girl that the Wizard leaves behind in Kansas in the beginning is Dorothy's mother :)

Better Than Expected, 3D is a MUST!

Seeing that Oz is sacred movie territory, my expectations were high. I was not left disappointed.

I could not imagine watching this movie in standard viewing. There is so much to take in viewing it in 3D. Just as the original was a breakthrough for color movies, this prequel delivers in Oz fashion for 3D.

I love the way the format mimics the original, yet remains independent for younger viewers who haven't grown up with the Wizard. The intro, (Black and White), is a little long, but I appreciate the back-story it creates. The overall storyline does an excellent job of entertaining while tying in perfectly as a prequel for the original Oz.

    This really worked for me!

    by pedsarq

What a great expansion (also technically a prequel) to the original The Wizard of Oz story/movie. Franco does a terrific job of playing the carnival wizard/con-man who gets flown to Oz by a freakish storm. Not surprisingly, the world of Oz is in turmoil due to the evil witches. There is, of course, a good witch who joins forces with Franco and she really wants him to succeed. The acting is top-notch and the characters are well written and well-played. Ultimately, this is a movie for kids and young adults, so some older audiences may be bored or disinterested. I'm in my mid-40s and I was drawn in and entertained through to the end.

Actually I fell asleep....we wasted our money!!! Bought tickets to see Imax-3D, but it was sold out and they bumped us down to just 3D. We were not the only ones this happened to!!! Bought them through FANDANGO! Next time I will buy them from the theater! Dissappointed!!!!

    It was "Oz"some!!!!

I am a huge fan of the Broadway musical Wicked" though surprisingly not as big a fan of the original Wizard of Oz. I loved this movie from start to finish. Great cast (especially Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis), great graphics and just the right amount of camp. Loved Findley and China girl. I would see it again!

    Oz The Great and Powerful

    by

A wonderful family movie. In our case ages 7 through 69 went all together as a family outing and it was a great time!!! The story line was clear and clever, the 3D was stunning and it was not too "intense" (as advertised) for our 7 year old at all. I would recommend it for all ages to see and enjoy!

Take The Kiddies For This One

    by Juvi

Alright, bad news first: The movie isn't as great for adults as I originally thought. Although it is very well cast, and the CGI is amazing, the story itself feels like it's dragged out, and the humor feels like it's trying too hard to be clever, yet falls short and ends up coming off as cheesy, instead. Perhaps I was just having an off day, but I couldn't buy the acting. It just didn't feel real to me.

All that aside, though, I could definitely tell it was a big-budget film. The cast was impressive, the CGI was amazing, and I could tell a lot of effort was put into putting it together. It's definitely tame enough to take the kids to, so if you have kids, taking them along would probably make the movie more enjoyable for you.

Didn't live up to the hype

Going into this movie I had high expectations because I love "The Wizard of Oz", so this may be the problem here, but the people I went with had low expectations and it still failed to meet those. While the movie is visually beautiful the story line was just so-so. It's not engaging at all and the movie really never comes to life. It's a decent way to past 2 hours if you're at home watching it for free on HBO, but it is not worth seeing in the theatres for the price of the ticket.

    The Whole Family Loved It!!!

    by

My family went to see it on Sunday with some friends and my daughter (7) and I were so excited my husband and son (14) not so much, but when we walked out laughing and talking and rehashing the whole thing realized everyone LOVED it even the 14 year old (who is normally much to cool for these sort of things). We loved the black and white beginning and when we were introduced to the land of Oz the brightness and the imagary was awesome! It was so fun to delve into the characters backstories. Michelle Williams and James Franco were just terrific. I want to go back and see it again. And we will be adding it to our blu-ray collection when it comes out!

30 bucks and 2 hours of my life I'll never see either again

I thought the story was thin and contrived, but they made up for it with really bad acting. I can't blame the actors as much as the script. It did have soem decent 3D effects, but seemed more like a showcase for 3D capabilities rather than an enhancement to the movie.

In my opinion, wait 'till it comes out on a pay channel, or better yet, until it ends up in the 99 cent rack at the local convenience store.

    Oz Great and Powerful

    by 1952JKH

Loved the movie. It revives the beloved Wizard of Oz that I have enjoyed for so many years. Great effects and the 3D was the best I have seen in a long time. Answers a lot of the questions we all had about how the witches and Oz came to be.

    I would highly recommend it.

    Colorful

The movies had surprises, adventure. It was so colorful and beautiful you wanted to become part of the movie, because the people were nice, and it would be nice if that was how the real world was. Fun picture for the family one witch was a bit scarey.

Oz The Great and Powerful is one of the best.

Oz The Great and Powerful is much better then the original. The story went in a different direction that isn't the same as the first story and I like the new version so much more then the original.
