This is not a movie for kids. But if you want Grisham-style drama, this may be your cup of tea.
I'm saddened to see the vacuous reviews written by people whose sense of literature is the movie theater. If you have not read Grossman's "On Killing", Grisham's "A Time to Kill" or Gladwell's "Outliers" (specifically the chapter A Culture of Honor), then you might not appreciate how authentic this movie is. This is likely a film that is better left for the well-read or the critics. But that doesn't mean that a curious film aficionado with an open mind and a tolerance for how down a human can get might not appreciate the film. A decade from now people will likely also appreciate just how bad the times were that led to the film's backdrop. It will all make sense once the viewer appreciates all that the film has to offer.
Be prepared to discuss the nuances of justice with your teenage kids if they see this film. And understand that the ending is suggested rather than explicitly stated.

The setting in rural Pennsylvania was beautiful and the acting was riveting. I think that Christian Bale depicted his soft, sullen, character to a T. He sucked you in with his quiet and thoughtful expressions. I appreciated his acting and felt pity for his character. Sam Shepard was the perfect uncle
. I like the way the director juxtaposed the fighting scenes and the deer hunting, He went back and forth with the two scenes. It brought to light the two different mentalities of the brothers. That created the crescendo prior to the brothers demise.Casey Afleck did a fine job. He was up against the best.
In the end, one wondered whether Christian Bale would pull the trigger. I will leave it at that. Don't want to spoil the ending.
It is a dark film. I can see where some women would not like this movie. However, I did!!

There is a lot of depth to this movie. It really is a work of art. The individuals and their relationships are thought provoking. A insight into the human psyche.

"Out of the Furnace" was an amazing movie, such a great cast and great performances, Christian Bale is one of the best actors of our time and proved it again..really nice touch having the song "Release" play at the beginning and end of the movie too. Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldena and everyone else also gave solid performances.

Look you have to be open to seeing something dark and gritty, if your manic depressed this may not be the movie for you but if you like to be blown away and taken to a pretty crazy place once in a while this movie rocks! Epic acting by Christian, Casey, Shepard, Harreson just kills it and Forest and Defoe are obviously veterans for good reason. It does channel a little bit of the Deer Hunter but also Into the Wild...
Went with my girl and she was blown away too.
