Met Opera's 2012 OTELLO HD telecast boasts terrific singing performances!!

The Metropolitan Opera has telecast Verdi's Otello several times - on tv, as well as in the HD format - and it has done well on almost all those occasions (The 1978 Jon Vickers /Renata Scotto performance is best ignored). This is the second time Renee Fleming has appeared as Desdemona - she last appeared in the tv telecast with Placido Domingo in 1994 - and she is as consistently effective in this telecast as she was 20 years ago. Fleming is meltingly romantic and ardent, and very moving as the drama progresses to it conclusion. Tenor Johan Botha has made a career of such dramatic tenor roles as Otello; he sings alone and with others very well and with great enthusiasm. On this telecast, his use of facial expressions was frequently generic, which detracted from his effectiveness, The orchestra played beautifully, and the scenic design was realistic and served to draw the audience into the story. Overall - very recommendable!!

Met Otello Reprise Showing

Wonderful evening, saw the original broadcast in 2012, the replay two weeks later and now for the third time. What a wonderful drama and brilliant, exciting score. Yes, I'd see it a 4th time too! Johan Botha captured the character of Otello and was first rate as always in voice; Falk Struckmann gave a magnificent performance as the evil villain Iago; and Fleming was at her delightful best in Verdi's adaption of Shakespeare's classic tale. Marvelous in all respects!!

FANTASTIC! I had read Shakespeare's play as a book which provided liner notes. I'm glad I did. Great production! Lies, deception, intense jealousy, finally revenge and inconsolable guilt. Agh, it was great!

Met Opera, Otello

My husband and I have attended three Met Opera performances at the AMC theater in Rockaway, NJ and it has been a wonderful opportunity to see current staging of favorite operas. We will continue to attend and appreciate this venue as senior citizens, "Otello" was by far the best of the three we attended although "La Boehme" was a very close second.

Falk Strickmann is the best Iago I have ever seen. But too many close-ups in filming, wanted to see a little more what was going on on stage.
